No Good Deed Goes Unrewarded

I was watching a judge show (my secret obsession) on tv while on my lunch break. There was this guy (the defendant) who was clearly trying to help this woman with a problem she was having. He went out of his way to help her. Even suggesting ways she could save money contrary to his own best interest, and she ended up taking him to court. She did not win, and I will leave it there. It is so tempting to editorialize.

As they sometimes do, each party is given the opportunity to comment on the case at the end of the show. His last words were “No good deed goes unpunished”. I wanted to shout at the television (as if he could hear) “No! You may not get your reward from her, but your efforts will not go unrewarded. Your job is to focus on what you can do and not what you get back. The universe will take care of that for you. It must. It is a law of nature! ”

What I am referring to are the universal laws as outlined in Deepak Chopra’s book “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” The law of Karma and law of Giving and Receiving. These laws are fundamental to the way that energy flows in our lives. In this case although this gentleman did not get the response he hoped in recognition of his good intentions for this woman, the energy he generated must come back to him. Remember Newton’s Law of Motion that we learned in school? For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction? In this case the kindness and consideration and care he gave will come back to him in kind. It may be that someone makes an exception to honor a request he is making. It may be someone letting you in front of them in heavy traffic or someone bending a rule in his favor. It may be getting the biggest and best slice of pie.

So, the bottom line is you get what you give. Give love and light and kindness and it will come back to you. When you lead with your light and love, you create and experience a world that is full of love and positivity. When you lead with hate or come from a place of fear you will see an abundance of that in your world. You will see the world that is against you not for you. And the cool thing is what many of us, including myself at one time, do not recognize. You choose. You can go through life with a chip on your shoulder or love in your heart. I hope you choose the later. I did and my life is so much better for it.
